Alongside its two core objectives of education and research, the University pursues a third mission: promoting the valorization and application of knowledge to contribute to the social, cultural, and economic development of society. In this perspective, each unit within the University works to communicate and disseminate knowledge through direct engagement with the territory and its stakeholders.
The University is fully aware of the importance of the Third Mission, both in terms of the economic valorization of knowledge and in its cultural and social aspects.
In the first area, the Third Mission aims to foster economic growth by transforming research-generated knowledge into knowledge useful for productive purposes. In this context, the Department focuses primarily on the following activities:
- Contract Research Activities
Using its available equipment, the Department provides external users with analytical services at differentiated rates for public or private entities. For entities under agreements approved by the Department Council, reduced rates are applied. - Research–Industry Relations
The Department aims to consolidate and strengthen relations with companies, both local and national or international, particularly for the establishment of industrial research contracts. - Intellectual Property (Patents)
Both industrial and academic research may lead to patents. - Spin-offs
The Department has identified spin-offs as a key tool for technology transfer with numerous companies and institutions in the territory.
In the second area, the Third Mission aims to produce goods with high cultural and/or educational value that promote societal well-being. In this context, the Department focuses its efforts mainly on the following types of activities:
- Educational Experiences for High School Students
In recent years, various degree programs have consistently offered educational experiences for high school students and teachers on a range of scientific topics. Programs have also been launched to enhance Chemistry courses and activities such as participation in competitions like “Young People and Science” organized by FAST (Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations). - Scientific Dissemination
Activities promoting and applying knowledge to contribute to social and cultural development are a key component of the Third Mission. DiSIT is strongly committed to supporting them to strengthen relations with the local community. This is achieved through public interventions, school programs, and events such as Researchers’ Night / Night of Research, an established opportunity to engage the public with scientific and technological research.
